Managing Your Money in Türkiye
Understanding the Turkish banking system early will save you both money and time. A local account makes rent payments, student reimbursements and daily spending much easier.
Opening a Bank Account
Most banks are foreigner-friendly, but document expectations can vary by branch. In practice, Ziraat Bankası, İş Bankası and Garanti BBVA are common starting points for exchange students.
- Ziraat Bankası is often the easiest option for foreigners
- İş Bankası has strong branch coverage and a solid mobile app
- Garanti BBVA offers a smoother digital experience
- Yapı Kredi can also be a good option depending on your city
Get your Turkish Tax Number first. You cannot open most bank accounts without it and obtaining it is usually quick and free at a local tax office.
What You Need
- Passport and a copy of your passport
- Turkish Tax Number (Vergi Numarası)
- Student document or residence paperwork if requested
- Turkish phone number
- Proof of address when the branch asks for it
Digital Alternatives
If you do not want to open a local bank account immediately, international fintech apps still work well for transfers and day-to-day spending.
- Wise for transfers with better exchange rates
- Revolut for multi-currency spending
- N26 for ATM withdrawals where available
- Always choose Turkish Lira at payment terminals to avoid poor conversion rates
When a payment terminal asks whether to pay in EUR, USD, or TRY, always choose TRY. Dynamic Currency Conversion almost always gives you a worse rate.
